Palau president was keynote speaker at Payu-Ta Congress

Palau President Tommy Remengesau Jr. was the keynote speaker of the Payu-Ta 6th Annual Micronesian Non Profit Congress held on Guam.

According to the president’s spokesperson, the conference had a theme of “Only We.” Payu-Ta is a gathering of community advocates and policymakers with this year’s gathering focusing on self-determination and self-direction.

Remengesau is a pioneer of conservation in the Pacific. He put Palau on the map for Palau’s effort to protect its marine resources and maritime territory.

Last year, Palau created a national marine sanctuary which will transform by 2020 some 80 percent of its exclusive economic zone to a no-fishing zone.

Remengesau is the eighth president of the Republic of Palau, and the first Palauan to be elected president three times. He was first elected president in 2000 and was re-elected in 2004. He served as senator from 2008 to 2012 and was re-elected president again in 2012.

He announced his bid for re-election in Palau last Monday, Feb. 29, and will attend one campaign event today on Guam. The Palau presidential election will be held in November.
