Palau pessimistic about COP 21 deal

PARIS, France (RNZI) — The president of Palau, Tommy Remengesau, says the COP 21 agreement is going to fall short of what needs to be done to combat climate change.

While delegates have agreed on a draft text, it is still too long and contains numerous square brackets, indicating sections that have not been resolved or options still to be chosen.

Remengesau says he knew before the talks an ambitious agreement was unlikely.

“Unfortunately we knew coming to Paris that we were not going to get the ambitious package that scientists are telling us we should have. So actually our discussions are going below what the scientists are telling us and unfortunately we now know we are talking about 2 degrees or 1.5 degrees which is far less than what the scientists recommend needs to be done.”
