Misadventures in Fishing, Part 2

SAM_0192It’s been a few weeks into the fishing misadventures and things seem to be progressing at a slow, but steady, pace. I haven’t gotten any hooks stuck in my hand in over two weeks and I no longer panic when something bigger than a goldfish bites my line!

My nearest-and-dearest and I have tested our fishing skill throughout different spots in Koror, and (as Susau pointed out) Ngermid yields the best results.

Our last visit to R&C Bait and Tackle resulted in two bamboo-based hand-lines, with which I am in love! They’re heaps easier to use than the plastic reel and so much lighter (and less breakable!) than using a glass bottle. I don’t know too many people who are quite as excited as me over my new bamboo fishing implements– but I think they’re brilliant.

Unfortunately for us, both Su and I defy logic as neither of us catch many fish except during low tide. I recently discovered that we defy common practice, as we’ve been catching kelsebuul lately– but with a fishing rod and hand-line and old squid. I don’t know what that means in terms of fishing, since I still don’t know too much about fish… But I do know that kelsebuul is delicious and I’m glad Su doesn’t eat fish.

Outside of Koror, we’ve also fished in Airai, Melekeok and Ngiwal. I’m a big fan of fishing at Imekang. For starters, it’s in Ngiwal– which is absolutely beautiful. It’s also a clean, breezy and wide-open space with a gorgeous view of Melekeok. And speaking of Melekeok… We’ve had fun fishing at their Btelulachang, which is gorgeous and fun to sit at and picnic in during storms.

So here I am, the Native Ex-Pat come home, and I really want to try fishing in Ngaraard and Ngerchelong. Susau and I don’t really know where we’d go in either of these places… So we’re still trying to figure that part out. I’m from both states, so here is my official request for fishing ideas: where do we go if we want to try fishing in Ngaraard ma Ngerchelong?

Also, I think I’d like to do a little more exploring on the other side of Babeldaob– but I don’t really know much of anything outside of the realm of Despedall. So a little guidance in that direction would be awesome as well.
